The proper sizing and installation of a furnace or air conditioner will determine three things, comfort, efficiency, and longevity. Conventional Warm Air Furnace The conventional warm air furnace is the least efficient with AFUE ratings as low as 55% to 75%. These older low efficient furnaces have a standing pilot. The standing pilot cost you money just to fuel the pilot even when your furnace is not heating your home. These furnaces do not have all the safeties that your modern furnaces have. If you have a standing pilot gas furnace we can come out and check for carbon monoxide and inspect your heat exchanger. We discount this visit not sell you something but to help insure your safety. Call 503.698.5588 Standard Efficiency Induced Draft Furnace Induced draft furnaces have an electronic ignition, either intermittent pilot or hot surface ignition instead of a standing pilot. The induced draft furnace uses a small fan to draw the combustion gasses into the flue. The combination of electronic controls, electronic ignition and creating a draft increases the efficiency of the furnace from about 60% to 80% AFUE. High Efficiency Condensing Furnace The high efficiency condensing furnace gets its name by using a second heat exchanger, hot flue gasses are cooled to the point where the water vapor condenses. This lets the furnace extract even more heat from the combustion process. The high efficient furnace flue gases are not hot and they can be vented to the outside horizontally with PVC pipe. The condensed water drains to the outside or drain. These condensing furnaces are high efficiency with an AFUE of up to 96.7% and use direct spark or hot surface ignition.
